Thomas Bock: Convict Engraver, Society Portraitist

Thomas Bock: Convict Engraver, Society Portraitist

Among early colonial artists, Thomas Bock can be seen as an archetype. Trained as an artisan in England, convicted and transported to early Tasmania, he reestablished an artistic career despite the convict stigma.

Initially this was because of the small colony's great need for skills, however, he finally gained acceptance, if somewhat begrudgingly given, as a society artist. Unlike other artists of the period, Bock went beyond the usual model, with his interest in and practice of photography.

This catalogue was published on the occasion of the exhibition held at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston in 1991.

In excellent condition with beautiful colour photographs throughout of Bock's work.
