The Port Stephens Story, by M A Bartlett
Port Stephens, north of Newcastle on the New South Wales central coast, had its name bestowed by Captain James Cook, when he sailed past it in May 1770.
Settlement in the area has never strayed far from the waters of its beautiful natural harbour. Indeed the waters themselves have played a dominant role in the history of Port Stephens. For the story of how settlements were founded and what consequently became of them very much depended on how the facilities offered by the port were, over time, utilised.
This booklet presents the history of Port Stephens, from its earliest historical perspective, through to its progress in transport, commerce and public services.
Published by the Port Stephens Historical Society, with the support of the Nelson Bay Rotary Club and the Royal Australian Historical Society. The exact year it was published is not known but the National Library of Australia estimates it to be 1980.
